Psoriasis Causes – Why Skin Cells Go Crazy

May 23rd, 2008 omilana Posted in common skin disorder, psoriasis treatment, skin disorder psoriasis Comments Off

When you have psoriasis, your skin cells run amok. While it normally takes about 30 days for new cells to reach the surface of your skin, in psoriasis they surface in just 3 days – much too fast to be shed. These out-of-control skin cells form plaques – pink, raised patches covered by silvery white scales.

Experts aren’t sure what the psoriasis causes are, but they do know it tends to run in families and most commonly hits in the teen years or middle age. Psoriasis tends to ebb and flare, although obesity, stress, smoking, certain drugs (Quinidine, a heart medication, and Inderal, a high blood pressure medication, to name two) or even a simple infection like a sore throat can aggravate outbreaks. Or you could go years without a flare-up; that’s the nature of this chronic but very unpredictable condition.

Psoriasis can be mild or extremely severe. Fortunately, most people escape with a few small patches on their elbows, knees or scalp. About 90 percent of people with psoriasis will also develop a form of arthritis associated with psoriasis that resembles rheumatoid arthritis.

Rx Mission: Remission

Having a doctor monitor your condition can make it easier for you to cope with psoriasis – emotionally as well as physically. “Everyone with severe psoriasis should get medical help,” says Albert M. Kligman, M.D., Ph.D.

The three most common treatments for psoriasis are topical treatments (applied to the skin), light therapy (called phototherapy) and oral drugs. Topical treatments, including steroids, calcipotriene (a cream-based derivative of vitamin D) and anthralin, reduce scaling and inflammation. Phototherapy, or exposure to ultraviolet-B light, helps clear psoriasis, while another form of light therapy, PUVA (psoralens and ultraviolet-A light), reduces cell growth. Oral drugs like methotrexate and cyclosporine also inhibit cell growth and reduce inflammation.

The treatments that work best, however, may also cause serious side effects. Taken in excess, methotrexate may cause liver disease, while PUVA ups the risk of skin cancer and steroids can thin the skin and occasionally aggravate the psoriasis itself. Moreover, the effectiveness of these treatments tends to decrease over time as your skin builds up a resistance to them for psoriasis causes.

To lower the risks and heighten effectiveness, these treatments are often juggled or used in alternating combinations – a strategy called rotational therapy. “Psoriasis can go into remission with any of these treatments, but the goal is to find combination treatments that make the remissions last longer,” says Alan Menter, M.D., clinical director of the National Psoriasis Tissue Bank at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas and chairman of the dermatology department of that university. Currently under development are a vitamin A-based gel that eases psoriasis without the side effects of steroids and a topical version of methotrexate, which may be less risky, since less of the drug is absorbed through the skin.

People are always looking for new beauty and skin care products but more people than ever are now looking for all natural skin care products as an alternative to chemical ones. Today, people are getting away from unhealthy chemical products and prefer to enhance their skin using all natural skin care. Made from essential oils, roots, herbs, and other natural ingredients, these are safe to use on your skin. Compared to going into a store and buying beauty products, all natural skin care is less expensive and does work well.

All natural skin care is a great way to look after your skin using natural ingredients such as roots and herbs combined with preservatives, emulsifiers and other carrier agents. These products are very popular because of their healing abilities and anti-inflammatory properties. All natural skin care ingredients proven effective as skin enhancers and used as treatments include:

• Beeswax, an all natural skin care wax found in honeybee hives, has many commercial purposes along with being used in skin care products and treatments. This has anti-microbial elements, healing properties, and is an effective moisturizing component.

• Shea butter is a natural fat, ivory colored or slightly greenish in color, extracted from the shea tree fruit by crushing the fruit and then boiling them. It is widely used as an emollient, skin softener, moisturizer, and heals skin conditions such as dermatitis and stretch marks. In hair conditioners, shea butter prevents breakage, revitalizes hair, and maintains or adds moisture to brittle, dry hair. Pure shea butter is one of the safest skin care products.

Some all natural skin care cures for acne include using coconut juice mixed with alfalfa or lettuce as a skin exfoliate, which helps remove the dead skin cells and regenerate new ones. Use a cotton ball to apply the mixture and rinse this off with cool water in approximately ten minutes. Fenugreek leaves are another popular natural acne remedy used to prevent breakouts. Crush the leaves into a paste and then apply directly to the affected skin overnight. In the morning, use warm water to rinse off the fenugreek, followed by rinsing with cool water. Honey has many healing and antiseptic properties. A mask made of honey applied a couple times weekly will remove the surface bacteria, which is often responsible for acne. White vinegar also works well as an all natural skin care acne cure. Use it full strength or dilute with a little water, apply with a cotton ball, and rinse after approximately six to ten minutes using cold water.

What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks skin cells, resulting in red, scaly patches on the skin that are itchy and painful. Around 2-3 percent of the population is affected by psoriasis and 25 percent develop psoriatic arthritis which is a painful inflammation of the joints.

Diet and Psoriasis Treatment

A particular diet has not been proven in psoriasis treatment, however it is helpful for patients to eat only what makes them feel the healthiest. It has been shown that a healthy diet and lifestyle benefits everyone; especially people with psoriasis. However, there may be a specific diet that people with psoriasis should follow. There is evidence that certain foods will contribute to either improving there are some connections between certain foods and the skin getting worse or clearing up. This must be is true for each individual with no general rules set guidelines of foods that are better or worse. However, a warm, stable climate in most cases will have a positive impact on patients. In addition, salt water and sun work both separately and together to promote a regression of psoriasis.

Psoriasis Treatment with Herbs

Herbs have a long history of success in the natural psoriasis treatment and many other skin conditions. In taking a natural approach it is usual to make an assumption that there is some kind of toxic buildup in the system and many remedies are intended to cleanse the system. Many herbs are well known to herbalists and having been used to treat diseases such as arthritis for centuries. Purchasing herbal compounds from either a pharmacy or a herbalist is a good idea because many natural compounds are very potent and may be toxic, and getting the right compound is a very specific science.

Other Psoriasis Treatments

A potential useful treatment for psoriasis is UVB light. The UVB light slows down the production of skin cells and reduces inflammation in psoriasis suffers. It is often used in combination with topical drugs and diet. Moderate to sever cases may be treated with systemic drugs such as methotrexate and cyclosporine or newer biologics such as Enbrel, Remicade, and Humira.

These medications, which range in potency from extremely mild to very strong, are used for psoriasis treatment and can be very effective. It is important to use these medications as directed. Overuse and sudden withdrawal of some oral corticosteriods can aggravate psoriasis.

Preventing aging and growing older with confidence and strength are totally two different things. There is no “cure” for aging, but one can age with care. So if you see advertisements that claim to cure aging, stay away- this is complete nonsense. However much you desire to turn back the clock, a “cure” for aging is nothing more than a magic powder. However, it is well known that methods for aging gracefully have been discovered, and have proven to be popular and effective. Natural anti-aging support comes in the form of two practices: a natural diet to support youthfulness as well as resistance training.

How to look younger

It is inevitable for a human being to experience the aging process; however, recent research has focused on how to cure the signs of aging, such as wrinkles of the skin, decreasing of strength, energy and speed, and failing eyesight. To our delight, some of the research has produced positive results. Aiming to cure yourself of the aging process is impossible and a little ridiculous, and accepting your body’s changes is more sensible. The natural treatment of aging along with natural supplements can help you as you age.

Natural diet for aging

If you consume certain nuts and vitamins alongside or together with your standard daily diet, you would not believe how much your memory can be improved! Ginkgo extract is traditionally used to improve age-related memory loss and therefore important in this Anti-Aging supplement. It can be used to boost your mental functions. Taking it everyday may improve your memory, mood and responses to stress, so as a highly helpful anti-aging support, it is worth trying.

In terms of vitamins, you should balance your dosage, increase some and reduce others. Vitamins B6 and B12 have been proven to be a successful, supplementing a natural anti-aging diet which can improve memory and other brain functions. Studies also suggest that strawberries and spinach, which are high in antioxidants, may be beneficial in slowing ARCD.

Exercise reverses signs of aging

Research shows that healthy older adults can substantially reverse muscle weakness after six months of resistance exercise training. So don’t hesitate to do some morning exercises if you are not already doing so. But this kind of exercise is different from what you did when you were young; it should be less strenuous, including for instance jogging, leg pressing, or shoulder pressing, which can make your joints supple, and keep you far away from the ravages of arthritis. Not only is exercise good for you, and not only can it reverse some of the physiological effects of decades worth of aging, but it also apparently never loses these powerful effects.

Studies also show the risks of a sedentary lifestyle, especially for the elderly. People who are sedentary age faster. So it may be necessary to start some exercise, such as walking, or resistance exercises.
